Roles and permissions
What each role can see and do, and why a button might be missing.
Every account holds one or more roles. Roles decide two things: which modules appear in your sidebar, and which actions you can take once you are inside one.
You can hold several roles at once. Permissions add up - someone who is both a mechanic and an inspector can do everything either role can do.
The roles
| Role | Responsible for |
|---|---|
| Administrator | Everything, including organisation settings and user accounts |
| CAMO engineer | The maintenance programme, airworthiness decisions, deferrals and fleet configuration |
| Planner | Work packages, scheduling, capacity and assigning work |
| Mechanic | Performing tasks, recording work done, raising defects |
| Inspector | Performing and independently inspecting work |
| Certifier | Certifying work and releasing aircraft to service |
| Storekeeper | Receiving, issuing and counting stock; shipments and tooling |
| Purchaser | Raising and placing purchase, repair, exchange and loan orders |
| Quality | Audits, occurrences, capability, qualifications and training |
| Reliability | Reliability analysis and reporting |
| Records | Airworthiness records and export packages |
| Commercial | Quotes, invoicing, receivables, budgets and lease commercials |
| Viewer | Read-only access across the operation |
| Flight crew | The technical log: sectors, and defects raised from the flight deck |
What "read" and "do" mean in practice
Nearly every staff role can read across the operation. That is deliberate: a mechanic planning a job needs to see whether the aircraft is leased, and a storekeeper needs to see the task that reserved a part.
Actions are much narrower, and are granted to the role that owns the consequence. A few examples:
- Only a certifier can release an aircraft to service.
- Only a storekeeper can receive or issue stock.
- Only a purchaser can place a purchase order.
- Only a CAMO engineer can change the maintenance programme, or defer a defect.
- Only quality can manage qualifications and the shop capability list.
- Stock adjustments are restricted to administrators, because they change recorded quantities without a physical movement behind them.
Flight crew are different
Flight crew do not get the general read access other roles have. They see the Techlog, can record sectors and raise defects, and little else. This keeps the flight deck surface small and focused.
Customers are not staff
People at your customers' organisations sign in to a separate customer portal with its own address and its own screens. They hold no roles at all, and can only ever see their own work orders, documents and invoices.
Why can't I see a button?
If an action you expect is missing:
- Check your roles. Open your account menu and look at your profile. The action may belong to a role you do not hold.
- Check the record's state. Many actions only apply at a certain point - you cannot issue a part against a task that has not been started, or close an order that still has open findings.
- Ask an administrator. Roles are assigned inside your organisation, not by A-Sync.
Hiding is not the same as blocking
A-Sync hides what you cannot use to keep screens uncluttered, but the rule is enforced on the server as well. Reaching a page by its address does not let you act on it.
